The IRS has scrapped its Direct File program for the 2026 tax season, eliminating a no-cost filing option that previously served taxpayers in 25 states. Despite this change, multiple free alternatives remain available for individuals with 2025 incomes below $89,000 and active military personnel.

Eight IRS-approved partners now offer free federal tax preparation software, with some extending the service to state filings. The average taxpayer spends $290 and 13 hours completing returns—a burden these programs aim to reduce. Eligibility requirements vary by provider, creating a patchwork of options for cost-conscious filers.
